Nell'epoca delle lotte fra Guelfi e Ghibellini, segnate da saccheggi ed incendi in tutto il territorio, nacque il castello-ricetto di Ghemme. Si trattava di un vero e proprio borgo fortificato, circondato da un muro difensivo con merlatura alla ghibellina e dal fossato, dove trovavano rifugio uomini ed animali, oltre a servire come luogo di conservazione delle derrate alimentari (grani e vino). Il complesso edilizio è posto a Nord-Ovest dell'antico abitato, è di forma rettangolare con una superficie complessiva di 12.000 mq. è l'unico esempio in Piemonte di fortificazione urbana complessa, con una strada centrale di spina, cui si accedeva per mezzo di un torrione con ponte levatoio, difeso da un rivellino, dalla quale si dipartono strade e vicoli secondari che originano isolati irregolari, con una serie di cortili e cortiletti. Agli angoli Nord-Ovest e Sud-Ovest si innalzavano due torrette cilindriche, di cui si è conservata solo la seconda. Le mura perimetrali, a scarpa nella parte inferiore, sono ancora in buona parte visibili mentre il fossato è stato interrato. Gli edifici, coi muri di ciottoli posti a spina di pesce ed intervallati da corsi di mattoni, presentano al piano inferiore la cantina, al superiore l'abitazione vera e propria, dotata di camino sporgente verso l'esterno, ed al di sopra un "solario" per deposito dei grani. Oggi il rinnovato acciottolato e l'illuminazione pubblica ricreano nell'antico castello l'atmosfera dei secoli passati.

 

At the time of the struggles between the Guelfs and the Ghibellines, which was marked by sackings and burnings throughout the region, the castle-refuge of Ghemme came into existence. It was a genuine fortified village, surrounded by a defence wall with Ghibelline style battlements and the moat, where people and animals could retreat in safety, serving also as a place to store provisions (wheat and wine). The group of buildings is situated to the northwest of the old town, and is rectangular in shape covering a total of 12,000 sq m. It is the only example in Piedmont of a complex urban fortification, including a main central street, reached through a tower with a drawbridge defended by a barbican, from which minor streets and alleys branch off creating irregular blocks with a series of courts and courtyards. At the north-west and south-west corners were two round towers of which only the second one remains. The outer walls, the lower part of which are scarp walls, are still mostly visible, while the moat has been filled in. The buildings.ì, whose walls are of stones arranged in herringbone pattern with layers of bricks at intervals, consist of the cellar on the lower floor, the actual living area complete with fireplace protruding outwards on the upper floor, and above that a “solarium” for storing grain. Today the new cobbled paving and illuminations help to create an atmosphere of past centuries in the old castle.

La chiesa parrocchiale dedicata a Santa Maria Assunta sorge al centro del paese, in piazza Antonelli. Eretta a partire dal 1666, fu completata a metà Settecento. La struttura è a croce latina con volta a botte e cupola sul transetto, riccamente decorata da stucchi barocchi ed affreschi settecenteschi, opera questi ultimi dei fratelli Giovannini di Varese e del Bianchi di Milano. é di particolare pregio l'altare maggiore (1763) in marmi policromi e bronzo, progettato da Benedetto Alfieri; la grandiosa tela (12 mq), collocata nella parete di fondo del coro, è opera di Giuseppe Antonio Pianca (1745). Le otto cappelle laterali sono ricche di opere d'arte, tra cui si segnalano: gli affreschi e tele dei Perracino (1779-82), le statue dell'Ardia e del Sella, il Cristo quattrocentesco. Nell'antico oratorio della Confraternita di S. Marta, dietro l'omonima cappella, si conservano interessanti affreschi di Giulio da Milano (1543). Nel lato destro del transetto si eleva lo Scurolo della Beata Panacea, opera dell'architetto ghemmese Alessandro Antonelli, eretto fra il 1864 ed il 1875. Di particolare pregio sono gli affreschi di Paolo Emilio Morgari e le vetrate policrome di Pompeo Bertini (1897), che raccontano i fatti salienti della vita della Beata Panacea, giovane pastorella, Vergine e Martire, uccisa sui monti di Quarona e le cui spoglie furono portate a Ghemme. Patrona della Valsesia, la Beata è costante oggetto di venerazione da sei secoli e particolarmente suggestive sono le processioni per le vie del paese in occasione della sua festa, il primo venerdì di maggio. Le spoglie della Santa sono custodite in una doppia urna, seicentesca quella interna, con ricche decorazioni d'argento, e ottocentesca quella esterna, in legno dorato, disegnata da don Ercole Marietti. Dello stesso Marietti è l'originale cuspide che sovrasta il campanile seicentesco.

 

The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta stands in the centre of town in piazza Antonelli. The building was begun in 1666 and finished in the middle of the 18th century. The struture is on a Latin cross with barrel vaulting and a dome over the transept. It is richly ornamented with Broque stuccoes and 18th century frecoes, the latter being the work of the Giovannini brothers of Varese and Bianchi of Milan. The high altar /1763) in polychrome marble and bronze, designed by Benedetto Alfieri, is particularly handsome; the grandiose oil painting (12 sq m) on the end wall of the choir is the work of Giuseppe Antonio Pianca (1745). The eight side chapels contain many works of art, noteworthy are the frescoes and oil paintings by the Perracinos (1779-82), the statues by Ardia and by Sella and the 15th century Christ. In the ancient oratory of the Confraternity of St Martha, behind the chapel of the same name, are some interesting frescoes by Giulio of Milan (1543). On the right side of the transept is the “scurolo” (tomb) of the Beata Panacea, a work of Alessandro Antonelli, architect from Ghemme, built between 1864 and 1875. Of particular interest are the frescoes by Paolo Emilio Morgari and the stained glass windows by Pompeo Bertini (1897), which depict the main details from the life of the Beata Panacea, a young shepherdess, virgin and martyr, who was killed on the hills of Quarona and whose remains were brought to Ghemme. The beata, the patron saint of the Valsesia, has been an object of veneration for six centuries and the processions through the streets of the town on her feast-day, the first friday in may, are of especial attraction. The remains of the saint are kept in a double urn, the inner one from the 17th century richly ornamented with silver, the outer one from the 19th century in gilded wood, designed by don Ercole Marietti. Marietti also designed the interesting cusp on top of the 17th century bell tower.

Nella piazza del castello, proprio di fronte a quello che era il torrione d'ingresso, è collocata la Chiesa di S. Rocco, edificata come ex-voto della Comunità ghemmese duramente colpita dalla peste del 1630-31. Alcuni affreschi recentemente restaurati, dal cinquecento al settecento, recuperati da vari edifici del paese, ne abbelliscono l'interno. Di particolare pregio una tela dei Perracino, il prezioso altare ligneo, ed il tronetto processionale disegnato dall'Antonelli.

 

In the castel square, exactly opposite what used to be the gateway tower, is the church of St Rocco, built as a votive offering by the population of Ghemme, heavily struck by the plague of 1630-1631. Some recently restored frescoes from the 16th to the 18th centuries, recovered from various buildings of the town, decorate the interior. A panting by the Peracinos, the wooden altar and the small processional throne designed by Antonelli are of special interest.

Lungo la strada che dal centro di Ghemme conduce verso Cavaglio d'Agogna sorge l'oratorio di S. Fabiano. La costruzione di una semplice cappella votiva aperta risale al XV secolo. Tra il 1681 ed 82 fu ampliata dalla Comunità di Ghemme con volta a botte. All'interno, sulla parte di fondo, è conservato l'antico affresco quattrocentesco, raffigurante una Crocifissione con due Angeli che raccolgono il sangue di Cristo, Maria Vergine e S. Giovanni, S. Fabiano e S. Cristoforo, il quale regge un cartiglio con lettere gotiche: Ego sum lux mundi via veritas et vita.

 

On the road leading from Ghemme towards Cavaglio d’Agogna stands the oratory of San Fabiano. The construction of a simple votive chapel dates from the 15th century. Between 1681 and 1682 it was enlarged by the community of ghemme with a barrel vault. Inside, at the end, is an old 15th century fresco showing a Crucifixion with two angels collecting the blood of Christ, Mary the Virgin and St John, san Fabiano and St Christopher, who is holding a scroll with Gothic lettering: Ego sum lux mundi via veritas et vita.

Situato sulla collina, coltivata a vite, che domina l'abitato sottostante, il castello-villa già dei Cavenago è di origine cinquecentesca. Trasformato nei secoli, oggi si presenta come un vasto rettangolo con tre torrioni angolari, mentre il quarto è stato abbattuto nel Seicento per realizzare la villa padronale, con un elegante portico colonnato interno ed un'altana in facciata. All'interno, il mastio centrale è stato convertito ad uso agricolo. Interessante l'antico pozzo a ruota, profondo circa sessanta metri. Nel torrione Nord è stato ricavato nel Seicento un piccolo e grazioso oratorio privato dedicato a S. Rosa da Lima.

 

On the vine-covered hill which overlooks the town below lies the castle-villa of the Cavenago family, of 16th century origins. Over the years it has been transformed and consists today of a vast rectangle with three corner towers, the fourth having been taken down in the 17th century to build the family villa, with an elegant internal portico on pillars and a roof-terrace on the façade. Internally, the central keep has been converted for agricultural purposes. There is an interesting old round well, about 60 metres deep. In the 17th century a small, attractive private oratory dedicated to St Rosa da Lima was set up in the north tower.

Nel cuore del paese il Giardino pubblico Gianoli offre uno spazio verde di svago e di riposo. Realizzato intorno alla metà dell'Ottocento dalla famiglia Gianoli, imprenditori edili, con piante fiorite e siepi di bosso, è abbellito da due fontane, dalla serra, utilizzata oggi per Mostre e Convegni, e da un'elegante torre belvedere di gusto.

 

In the heart of the town is the Gianoli public garden, a green area in which to rest and relaz. It was created around the middle of the 19th century by the Gianoli family, building contractors, with flowering shrubs and box hedges, and is ornamented with two fountains, a glasshouse used today for exhibitions and conferences, and a graceful belvedere tower in the neogothic style.
