The parish church of Santa Maria Assunta, in the southern area of the town, originally dates from the late 10th and 11th century and was rebuilt in the late 15th century by the Viscontis of Fontaneto, a cadet branch of the Milanese noble family. As can be seen from records of visits, it formerly consisted of a single orientated nave which was well-paved and complete with a presbytery covered by cross vaults. In the 16th century the bell-tower was erected to the side of the presbytery on a square plan, according to the directions of Ferrante Gonzaga, which were that bell towers should also serve the purpose of a defence bastion as a sighting point of the enemy. The tower also had a wooden stairway which could be drawn up, typical of defence towers. The first important extension of the building was carried out in the baroque period with the addition of the two side aisles and the choir. It acquired its present imposing appearance later on towards the middle of the 19th century with the new building of the “scurolo” (tomb) in which the remains of St alexander are kept. The rotunda of martyred Saint was planned by the architect Alessandro Antonelli and repeats the motifs of the classical Pantheon right up to the skylight on the top, enclosed with polychrome glazing. All round it are the ten bas-reliefs executed by Giuseppe Argenti of Novara and showing details of the life of the Saint, which are above the ten niches each containing a terracotta statue. The altar in white Candoglia marble was also designed by Antonelli and carved by Stefano Bossi, sculptor from Novara. Also of interest is a panel dating from the beginning of the 16th century and showing the Assumption of the Virgin, which has recently been attributed to Sperindio Cagnoli and is on the wall above the choir. Another handsome work is the large 17th century altarpiece by Tanzio da Varllo, an Valsesia artist, showing the Trinity with the Saints in adoration, at the top of the right nave. An important 16th century masterpiece by Ottaviano, showing the Virgin and Child between St Bernardino and John the Baptist, which used to be in the parish church of Fontaneto, is now in the Pinacoteca Sabauda of Turin.
The existence of a castle in Fontaneto has been recorded since Carolingian times, when in the early 10th century Gariardo bishop of Vercelli founded a Benedictine monastery dedicated to St Sebastian within the castle precincts. As time passed the religious establishment became more and more important: it was not in fact bound under the jurisdiction of the bishop of Novara since it was a private foundation. The famous “synod of Fontaneto” was held at the abbey in 1057, during which the Lombard bishops who were present decided to oppose the Patarine movement led by Arialdus. Only towards the end of the 12th century did the monastery pass under the protection of the abbey of Saints Graziano and Felino in Arona. The village of Fontaneto went through many political and religious ups and downs over the centuries. The castle was rented in 1399 to Manfredo Barbavara, personal counsellor to the duke of Milan Gian Galeazzo Visconti, and later was destroyed by Facino Cane, a bitter enemy of the Barbavara family. It was not until 1456 that the castle was rebuilt, taking in the old abbey buildings as well. Now only the noble house remains, much altered, including a long granite balcony and a 15th century decoration below the external eaves ono the west side. Remains of the stone wall belonging to the ancient abbey of St Sebastian are visible. Also of interest is the lunette of the arcade of Casa Teruggi, with the devotional fresco showing the Madonna of the Rosary with Saints and with an inscription dated 23 august 1668 bearing witness to the French attack of 13 June 1636.
